Eighth annual Relay for Life held Saturday, March 25

The event raised over $75,000 for the American Cancer Society

Mill Valley raised over &75,000 at its annual Relay For Life event on the football field Saturday, March 25.

This event was open to the public from 5-9 p.m. and the team members that raised over $100 stayed until 2 a.m. Committee member junior Blake Powers said he participated in the fundraising event to help with a cause that’s important.

“I chose to be a part of relay because it is such an incredible cause,” Powers said. “I would like to devote my time and money to something good.”

Each group had a different event that the public could spend tickets on. Junior Abby Wolff explains the event her group had.

“Our group event was colored hairspray,” Wolff said. “It was so much fun and the kids really loved it. It was a huge hit, we always had a line of people wanting colorful hair.”

As the night went on the groups started to get creative on how to have fun and stay busy. Powers and his group made the most of the rainy weather and encouraged others to do the same.

“My favorite part of the night was the dance party my group had in the rain,” Powers said. “Some other people from other groups joined in and we just had fun making the best out of the circumstances.”

Each year student participating set a goal for the event, and sometimes that goal can mean different things to some people. Wolff shares what that goal looked like for her.

“I feel like we reached our goal based on the turnout of people in the community,” Wolff said. “It showed that our school really does care about the cause. The community came together all for the same reason.”

This night can be both emotional and exciting for students. For Powers, he felt like the night had mixed emotions.

“I think everyone can say that you get a mixture of emotions at relay for life,” Powers said.  “At some points, it can be really fun and uplifting and at others, it can be really sad and somber to highlight how terrible cancer is.”
