A Thanksgiving treat that brings my family together
The tradition of making Oreo turkeys helps my family to grow closer each year
One of the most exciting parts of being an elementary school student was participating in class parties, whether that be for Halloween, Christmas or birthdays. I know that just thinking about being able to bring in a birthday treat made me beyond ecstatic. This was primarily because it meant that I could make Oreo turkeys. Every single year we’d send in these Thanksgiving themed treats so that kids at my school could have a small Thanksgiving celebration.
As the years have passed, I have come to appreciate the constancy of something as simple as a turkey made out of Oreos. With each passing year, I recognize November as the month of birthday cake, pumpkin pie and Oreo turkeys. This annual tradition of making silly treats not only throws me back to when I was younger but also reminds me to be thankful for aspects of my life today.
Oftentimes, it’s these little family traditions that wind up meaning the most to people. Even if it’s something as simple as putting the star on the Christmas tree or staying up to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. It’s these seemingly minuscule moments, that bring friends and families together year after year. Even though traditions vary from family to family and friend group to friend group, they all provide a sense of unity that is hard to find as people grow apart.
That why I know that even if I end up living hundreds of miles away from my family, we will always be united by something as small as turkeys made out of Oreos.
To those interested, here is the recipe for how to make Oreo Turkeys.
You will need:
- Double Stuf Oreo Cookies
- Candy Corn
- Whoppers
This treat is extremely simple to make, and each turkey can be made within five minutes.
- Start with a single Double Stuf Oreo and split it into two cookies. Around the perimeter of the cookie with frosting, place candy corns to resemble the feathers of a turkey.
- Place the cookie without frosting back on the cookie with candy corn, sandwiching the candy corn between the two cookies.
- Next, take another Double Stuf Oreo and split into two cookies as well. This will be the base for your turkeys body.
- Place the previously made Oreo cookie with candy corn, and vertically into the frosting of the second Oreo cookie you’ve just split in two. The cookie should be able to stand up all on its own with the frosting acting as adhesive.
- Once you have the feathers for your turkey in place, it’s time to add the head. Place a whopper into the center of the Oreo, and the frosting will adhere it into place.
- Finally, trim down another piece of candy corn, and place it in front of the whopper to look like the beak of the turkey.
That’s it! I hope some of you enjoy making these Thanksgiving treats with your family this year!
