Baseball team wins Kaw Valley League Championship
After defeating Tongonoxie in a double-header, the baseball team prepares for regionals
The varsity baseball team won the Kaw Valley League Championship after defeating Tongonoxie High School in a double-header, 13-1 and 15-5, on Wednesday, May 7. After losing its game against Bishop Ward High School on Tuesday, May 6, junior Noah Johnston said the team was excited to get back to winning.
“It was nice to get back on the winning side,” Johnston said. “The last three games were against decent teams and they were really good preparation for regionals.”
Even with its success, Johnston said the team needed to work on pitching overall for regionals.
“[We need to work on] pitching to throw more strikes,” Johnston said. “We’ve walked quite a few kids this year [and this is bad because] if you walk somebody it’s like giving them a free pass. You want to make them earn their way to base.”
According to head coach Jeff Strickland, beating Tongonoxie helped the team because it gave the team leverage going into regionals on Monday, May 19.
“You want to win your last two season games before regionals,” Strickland said. “[For regionals, we need to work on] all aspects of the game because you can always get better. The second you don’t feel like you can get better is when you start making mistakes and losing.”
