Beauty Boss: God bless the scientific method
September 7, 2015
As a beauty addict, Very Important Beauty Insider member at Sephora and general makeup snob, pricey, high-end products have always been my vice. Nothing tops adding a new Benefit mascara, Makeup Forever concealer or Urban Decay Naked palette to my ever-growing collection. Last Thursday, though, I stumbled upon a hidden gem of a makeup line at Walmart.
The Neutrogena Cosmetics line, which claims to be “better for your skin than no makeup at all,” caught my eye. With homecoming around the corner and my skin in shabby condition, I looked over the entirety of the collection. I’m more than familiar with the skincare company, but as a makeup line? It makes some pretty bold claims. I was skeptical regarding the coverage quality, but it was half the cost of the same things I could’ve gotten at Sephora and I was curious to learn more. So, naturally, I bought the entire line.
Since Friday, I’ve been using only Neutrogena’s products and tracking the progress they’ve made on the appearance of my skin. I even stopped using face wash of any kind so I can really test Neutrogena’s claims. Yay, science.
Every day for four days now, I start off with Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin primer. Then, I apply the SkinClearing oil-free makeup using a concealer brush and blend with a makeup sponge. Then, under my eyes, I apply the Healthy Skin 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes. I let it sit for a few minutes, then blend it with a makeup sponge. Personally, I think it’s easier to hide under eye circles using shade or two lighter than my skin tone. Next, I cover any remaining visible blemishes with the SkinClearing Blemish Concealer. Lastly, I use the SkinClearing mineral powder to prevent any shininess later in the day.
It sounds like I’m caking it on with four skin products, right? It’s actually surprisingly light feeling and natural looking, though. The colors match my skin tone super well, which is not an easy feat. Plus, they blend easily and the coverage is fantastic. It hasn’t even been a week and I’ve already noticed a reduction in my acne scars, and any zits I did have significantly reduced in severity, size and redness.
However, as compared to when I wear my usual products, my skin looks a little duller and the shine prevention of the mineral powder is a bit lacking. By the end of the day, I already notice my forehead shining like a new penny. Although as soon as I take off my makeup (using Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover cleansing towelettes) though, my skin looks brighter, healthier and straight up glowing. I’ve still got a few remaining blemishes, but I expect them to disappear in a few more days.
The last, and probably most prominent, flaw in the line would be the lack of variety in its available shades. Granted, I’m Mexican and naturally tan, but I spend most of my time indoors and I’m using the second to darkest shade they have, which is kind of sad. It’s 2015 Neutrogena, come on. For those who are pale Mexican complected or lighter, though, the Neutrogena line is a great value with promising results.
