Blog: All my favorite things are coming back

More from Geek Guru

The phrase “new year, new me” might as well be “new year, new obsessions” for me. I’ve already mentioned my recent discovery of Game of Thrones in my last blog. Just this week, however, it seems some old favorites are coming back to consume my life again. My past fixations are revived again, thanks to Nintendo, NBC and Marvel (a.k.a. the usual suspects).

First off, NBC’s comedy “Parks and Recreation” is my favorite TV show of all time (though “Game of Thrones” is making it a tough competition). The “Office”-esque show focuses on the local government of the Midwestern town Pawnee. At the end of the second season — spoiler alert — the show took a two-year time jump to 2017. The show is now back on Tuesdays for its final season. Not knowing the dynamic of all the characters and their relationships thanks to the time shift is really throwing me for a loop, and I’m not quite sure if I like it yet. But I’m definitely still watching; the charming humor is the same as ever. (While “Parks and Rec” is not the nerdiest show on TV, it still gets a mention on Geek Guru because my obsession with it might reach total geek level. Also, the adorably nerdy character Ben Wyatt, and my spirit animal, would be proud.)

Switching to video games, (or as my AP Literature and Composition teacher Justin Bogart would say, here’s the shift), Nintendo just announced this morning a bunch of new things for me to spend all of my money on. You can watch the full Nintendo Direct here, but the part that’s most important to me is the announcement of a new Fire Emblem game. This game, when released, will be the 14th game in the main series. It’s really hard to not start using lots of capital letters and exclamation points, because Fire Emblem is one of my favorite game series of all time. We don’t know a lot of details about the game yet, but the fact that it exists is awesome in the first place. The art style is the same as Fire Emblem: Awakening (the most recent game in the series and the only other title for 3DS). While the gameplay that was shown in the trailer also looks similar to its predecessor, the gaming website Kotaku reports that Nintendo aims to add new features never seen in the series before. Honestly, I could just take a long nap until the day this game is released, and awaken to a better world.

Back to the realm of TV, ABC started airing Marvel’s “Agent Carter” series, which focuses on Captain America’s love interest from the ’40s, Peggy Carter. I’m all about Marvel having a female-led show, plus the plot will reveal more about Cap and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s origins. It will definitely make us all wonder what amazing super-babies could’ve existed if Captain America and Peggy Carter were able to follow through with their mutual love interest (i.e., if Cap wasn’t turned into a popsicle for about 50 years). In other Marvel news,  a new “Avengers: Age of Ultron” trailer was released. More schemes to get my money? Time will tell.

It’s only the first month of 2015, and it already looks like it will be a promising year for the Geek Guru. Whether you wish to join me, or simply be amused by my escapades, I hope you stay tuned.
