Blog: Beyoncé's lip-syncing fiasco

Last week on his show, Anderson Cooper spilled the truth tea.

“As far as I’m concerned, it is Beyoncé’s world and we are just living in it.”

We are indeed, Anderson. We are indeed.

If you were a good American and tuned into the 2013 Presidential Inauguration on Monday, Jan. 21, I’m assuming you saw Beyonce’s flawless performance of  “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It’s Beyonce, so obviously it was good, but was it too good to be true? So some believed, seeing as the performance immediately spawned rumors that she was lip-syncing. By the way people reacted, you would’ve thought the world was ending. I was planning on playing Nancy Drew in this week’s blog in order to find out the truth, but Beyonce came right out and cleared up the rumors herself. Turns out, she did lip-sync to a pre-recorded track. I can forgive her, though, because her reasoning was understandable. Well, and because she’s Beyoncé.

“Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check,” she said at a New Orleans press conference yesterday, Thursday, Jan. 31, for her Super Bowl halftime show. “I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the President, the Inauguration. I wanted to make him and my country proud, so I decided to sing along to my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry.”

I respect Beyonce for being upfront about the whole ordeal and not trying to fool the public. I’ve always admired her class and the way she carries herself and this is just an example of that. She looked beautiful as always, and I hope people can acknowledge the fact that the pre-recorded track she lip-synched to was still her singing. And that singing was tremendous.

The bottom-line of this whole debacle? People have high standards for Beyonce just because she is so talented and is very capable. Rest assured, these high standards will be met this Sunday, Feb. 3, when Beyoncé performs at the Super Bowl halftime show. When asked by the reporters about the halftime show, her answer was promising.

“I will absolutely be singing live,” she said. “This is what I was born to do.”

And for the record, Beyoncé can sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” live (watch her kill it at the press conference). All I can say is this: goosebumps.
