Blog: Communication is important for success

How crucial is communication? Consider the following circumstance: You just got your history test back. Looking over the test, you find that one of your fill-in-the-blank answers doesn’t match up with the teacher’s answer, but still makes sense. You raise your hand and ask for clarification. Lo and behold, your answer is just as correct as the answer your teacher has on the key and you get a point back. If you hadn’t asked, you wouldn’t have received the point.

Communicating is a skill that is often taken for granted. Some people think that communication is just talking; it’s much more complex than that. Communicating takes a special talent to make sure that your words come across in the right way. Making sure people truly understand you and what you’re trying to say is a dire skill in which everyone should learn to be proficient.

In the classroom it is extremely important to make known what you feel. It is your responsibility as a student to make sure you are getting the help you need. If you don’t understand something, get clarification. If a teacher is doing something that is upsetting you, tell them and try to find a solution to the problem. Not only is communicating an important skill in itself, it helps build other skills as well, such as problem solving. If you know how to speak to people, you can come up with solutions to different issues that impact you.
