Blog: Geeky gift guide

More from Geek Guru

With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s time to start making rough drafts of wish lists, and checking them twice (or three times, because presents are serious business). It’s also time to start figuring out what to get for friends and family, too. I find that when gift-giving holidays come around, I tend to forget everything I’ve ever wanted and what kind of things my friends and family like. So, for the geek in you, your friends or your family, I’ve compiled a list of some gift ideas.

TV

The biggest geeky tv show as of recent is definitely “Game of Thrones.” HBO has certainly caught on to this fact, and it is almost impossible to visit a book store without also being in the vicinity of “Game of Thrones” graphic novels, action figures and guidebooks based on the series. Because it is so merchandised, it’s not too hard to find gifts for fans. You can buy cute and collectible vinyl pop figures, or less cute, more detailed figurines.  The Iron Throne ornament is also a nice choice. Heck, there’s even a cookbook. There’s a bunch of options out there.

Movies

This might be one of the pricier of the ideas on this list, but I can attest to the greatness of cinematic art books. They are collections of concept art and costume mock-ups, along with interviews with the cast and crew of the film. I’m a big fan of the Marvel art books myself, but there are art books for most movies, including Ghibli and Disney movies. Even if the person the gift is intended for isn’t into movies, there are also art books for video games.

Comics

When it comes to comics, there are some obvious options, like a DVD of a superhero movie. There’s also any of the generic Marvel and DC graphic T-shirts you can find at Target, Walmart, JCPenny or basically anywhere that sells graphic T-shirts. If you want to step up your game, try collectibles (not including the $8 action figures in Toys R Us). They can be pretty cheap, like this keyring of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, or expensive like this swanky gym bag. If you’re still unsure of a gift, a subscription to a comic is also a great idea.

Music

Soundtracks are a great choice for geeky music fans. Did they like the robot sci-fi movie “Pacific Rim”? Maybe they like “The Hunger Games” or the great video game “The Last of Us.” Also, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack is full of jams. There’s a soundtrack for everyone, pretty much. Another good choice for geeky fans of music is the electronic artist Polish Ambassador. Their music is fun and very video game-like, influenced by chiptune music of retro games.

Tech

A lot of techy gifts can be super expensive, but there are still some cheap presents for tech lovers. You can try themed USB drives, like these animal ones. Plus, it’s never a bad idea to get some  back-up phone chargers or earphones, because they can both be incredibly easy to lose or break, and it’s always nice to have an extra on hand. And let’s not forget how great car chargers for your phone can be, especially since smart phones’ batteries nowadays tend to be on the short side.

Science

Science contains a wide-range of interests, so while it might be difficult to find a physics-themed gift (here’s a bowling ball and a tennis ball, son! Go and drop them from the roof and see which one falls faster!), I found some pretty swag ones for astronomy and biology. You might want to wait on getting your loved one a ticket for commercial space travel, but these spaceship slippers are basically the same thing. OK, so they won’t get to see the Earth as the beautiful blue orb it is, but they can warm their feet from the chilling winter break temperatures in style. For biology, these plush cells come in all different kinds, from the common cold to a red blood cell to the plague. Plus, they’re fairly affordable.

Games

If the gamer you’re buying for likes Nintendo, you should consider the amiibo that come out this week. They work together with certain 3DS and Wii U games (including Super Smash Bros., which I wrote about previously), but they are also cute little figures to collect. Cute little figures that I will probably spend all my money on at some point. If you’re looking for a gift for a PC gamer, try the companion cube plush from the great Portal series.

Anime

While it is pretty pricey, a box set of “Attack on Titan” DVDs is a great gift for anime fans. “Attack on Titan” was arguably the most popular anime of this year, and its release on DVD means watching the intense and beautifully animated action scenes in HD. If the DVDs are too pricey, you can also get volumes of the original manga (Japanese comics) that inspired the show. Another beautifully animated anime to keep in mind as a gift idea is the movie remake of the classic “Neon Genesis Evangelion.”

Books

For science fiction fans, “The Time Traveler’s Almanac” is a great idea;  it contains several stories about time travel by famous authors like George R.R. Martin and Isaac Asimov. Harry Potter fans would enjoy the newly imagined covers of the beloved series. If those don’t strike your fancy, an overall good and geeky choice is “Geektastic,” which happens to have a cameo in my blog mug.
