Blog: Single review: "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato

Former Disney star Demi Lovato has proved yet again that she’s not still a manufactured “Disney girl,” but a true pop artist. Lovato released her new single titled “Heart Attack,” on Sunday Feb. 24. It skyrocketed to number one on the iTunes Top 100 chart the first day it became available for digital download and has since managed to remain in the top 10.

“Heart Attack” is strictly a pop song but, as usual, Lovato brings her own edgy, rock-inspired twist to it. Synthetic instruments are used throughout the track, but those are combined with real instruments such as drums and acoustic guitar. This is something I’ve always respected about Lovato; just like her last chart-topper, “Give Your Heart a Break,” which was fully composed by raw instruments, she has not given in too heavily to the electronic/dubstep/dance trend that has dominated pop music for a couple of years now. Lovato’s voice is incredibly strong and absolutely beautiful and she doesn’t add any annoying vocal effects–thank God, because she doesn’t need to. She has paved her own territory in pop music simply because her music naturally has that ‘Demi’ touch.

The song’s intro catches your attention and the verses start out slower, her vocals being laid over a pretty cool beat. The more acoustic-sounding hook comes in after that and the Demi belt starts to come out. The song slows down for a few seconds, then–wait for it–here comes the chorus, where Lovato’s strong belt is at full effect. The slightly repetitive chorus, which mainly just says, “I think I’d have a heart attack” over and over is catchy enough to get stuck in people’s heads, but not too annoying that it irritates listeners.

Lovato has always been open about her personal issues, such as her battles with an eating disorder and bipolar disorder; these have been previously expressed through tracks on her impressive last album “Unbroken” (you should definitely check it out). In a two-part interview with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show when the song first made its radio debut, she alluded to what “Heart Attack” could be about, and it appears to have been inspired by more of her personal experiences.

The next album from Lovato does not yet have a set release date or title, but will be out sometime this year. In the meantime, check out this super cool lyric video for “Heart Attack.”
