Blue Crew promotes school spirit

Members of the Blue Crew club worked steadily in the art room on the decorations for their Homecoming float on Tuesday, Oct. 4. They dipped their brushes in dark blue paint and carefully decorated the posters laid out on the tables before them. The words “BLUE CREW” appeared on a white paper in bold letters. The members then placed the posters with the other finished products on their float to promote the club.

Blue Crew became more involved in promoting school spirit and getting students to support extracurricular activities. According to sponsor Jessica DeWild, the club differed from previous years.

“We started strong last year. A lot of people came, but then it turned into no participation quickly,” DeWild said. “This year there are lots of ideas and it’s more organized.”

Blue Crew’s executive board consisted of about 15 members who planned and ran all of the club’s events. Junior Kylie Andres found the executive board to be very effective.

“We’ve made a lot of changes,” Andres said. “Our biggest goal is to get everyone involved because it’s not one group, it’s all of the student body and faculty.”

The club held many events including football tailgates, tie-dye opportunities and a tutu making party which served as one of their most successful events.

“So many students came that we ran out of tulle. We told people how to do it and encouraged them to continue,” DeWild said. “My favorite part was getting to watch the senior girls make the tutus alone because of how well they bonded.”

Blue Crew tried to pump up school spirit, but according to senior Colin Bonebrake, the group couldn’t do it alone.

“It’s ultimately up to the student body. If they don’t want [school spirit], it won’t happen,” Bonebrake said. “We want a school-wide Blue Crew and complete and total domination of the school.”
