Members of the Olathe Special Olympics team met up with the boys basketball team for an afternoon of games on Saturday, Jan. 12. At the start of the clinic players ran drills at each station. According to junior guard Drew Boatwright, it was a chaotic and fun event.
“We had drills set up for all the kids to participate in,” Boatwright said. “Half way through it became a dance party, and we all just had a good time.”
Boatwright learned different ways to interact with the members of the Special Olympics team.
“It was different because it was harder to communicate with them,” Boatwright said. “They get distracted easily, sang songs and danced on the court when we played music.”
Boatwright thought the Olathe team was very outgoing and had no problem talking to everyone that participated in the clinic.
“The thing that stuck out to me the most was how social they were with each other, most people I know are not that social,” Boatwright said. “The way they act is like they have known each other their entire life.”
Junior small forward Aaron Geise formed a new outlook on being a part of the basketball team.
“We need to be thankful for the opportunity to be playing on the team,” Geise said. “Some people never get that opportunity even though they love the game more than some of us do.”
