The boys golf team finished third at the Spring Hill Invite on Thursday, April 3, with a team score of 339.

After competing in the tournament, sophomore Kyle Bonnstetter, who shot a score of 89 and had two birdies on the day, felt good about the overall performance of the team despite its inexperience.

“I thought we did pretty good as a team because we placed third,” Bonnstetter said. “We have a young team with only one senior, four freshman and one sophomore.”

Coach Drew Walters attributed the team’s success to its growing confidence.

“What contributed to our success was that everyone is getting more confident in their own abilities and becoming more comfortable with tournament play,” Walters said.

According to Bonnstetter, the course and the recent rain added challenges to the tournament which made him focus harder.

“[The course] was really wet and the greens were pretty fast,” Bonnstetter said. “I had to focus on making sure I hit the ball straight and not out of bounds.”

Walters hoped that the team’s placing will help its members perform well in future tournaments through the rest of the season.

“I hope that it gives everyone some confidence in the next few tournaments we have,” Walters said. “Everyone is playing better.”

Even though the team placed well, Walters believed the team still has work to do in order to finish the season strong.

“The team needs to continue to work hard at practice and on their own,” Walters said. “They also need to find ways to play their best golf when it matters the most.”

The next golf tournament will be at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course in Milford, Kansas, on Thursday, May 5.
