The boys tennis team lost its dual against Kansas City Christian 2-7 on Thursday, April 9.

Six varsity players competed in the dual, playing in three doubles matches and six singles matches. The team went 0-3 in doubles and 2-4 in singles.

Although he lost his doubles match with senior Eric Marquardt 2-8 and his singles match in a tiebreaker, freshman Dante Peterson said the team played well against against players that were hard to beat.

“It went alright,” Peterson said. “I think everyone played pretty good. [Kansas City Christian was] just a good team.”

Head coach Eric Ammerman agrees that the team did well, given its opponent.

“Kansas City Christian is really good,” Ammerman said. “They won state in 1-3A last year and so I think we did pretty well. I think there were some places where we could’ve done better but that’s partially Kansas City Christian just being really, really good.”

Peterson said serving was his main weakness in his matches, so he hopes to improve upon it in the future.

“I didn’t serve great, so I’d work on my serves,” Peterson said.

Ammerman hopes the team, mostly consisting of sophomores, will improve with more time and experience.

“We’ve got a pretty young team,” Ammerman said. “Maybe in a year or two we’ll be even better because they’ll just have more experience … Experience is going to help.”

Despite the loss, Ammerman said the team shouldn’t lose confidence.

“It was a pretty rough outing,” Ammerman said. “I just think that we can’t beat ourselves.”
