The team hosted a meet against Blue Valley High School and Washburn Rural High School Wednesday, Jan. 26. The team won their match against Blue Valley and lost their match against Washburn Rural on senior night.
During one of the matches, sophomore Maddox Casella beat a two-time state champion from Blue Valley High.
“My goal was to beat him. I’ve been preparing for that match for a long time, working every single day on what I needed to do to win,” Casella said. “I made sure I was ready before my match and I went out there and got the job done.”
The team’s loss against Washburn Rural didn’t affect how proud Casella felt of his team.
“The team did great,” Casella said. “From the start of the season to now, we have made a lot of progress and we are still not done.”
Like Casella, sophomore Brady Mason felt ready for his matches and took time to perfect what he was going to do.
“I was pretty prepared for it,” Mason said. “I was warming up and just trying to focus.”
Overall, the end of the competition ended being bitter sweet for the team, because they were excited to see the seniors accomplish so much but were sad to see them go.
“For me it was just thinking about all the seniors that I will not see next year, it’s sad honestly,” Mason said.
In the end, the meet ended with one win and one loss, Mason thought highly of his team.
“I thought we wrestled well. We had a few mistakes in the beginning,” Mason said. “Overall, we had fun and did pretty good.”
