The cheer team traveled to Topeka Saturday, Nov. 23, to compete in the Kansas 6A Cheerleading State Championships. Their hard work paid off, as they left with the championship title.
Sophomore Olivia Pearce, expressed why she was proud of all the work she and her team put in.
“We did a lot of full outs to prepare and make sure all of us felt confident in what we were doing,” Pearce said.
In the preliminary round of the competition, all teams performed three routines: crowd leading, band chant, and fight song. Sophomore cheerleader Amanda Makalous had high hopes for the team.
“After our preliminary performance, we all felt really good,” Makalous said. “Once we found out we were going to finals, we all felt more nervous to do even better since we were so close to winning.”
Mentally preparing for state finals is just as important as physically preparing. Senior cheerleader Emersyn Jones aims to have a steady, positive team prepared to impact the outcome of their success.
“We did a lot of prayers and devotionals to lean into our faith more to avoid being so stressed about the competition,” Jones said.
Their hard work paid off, and they executed a nearly flawless performance, hitting all aspects of their routine. Makalous shares that the excitement the team shared was unmatched.
“It didn’t even matter what we placed, we were all just so happy. I was so proud of my team for pushing through and putting everything on the mat,” Makalous said.
