As the year progresses and holidays come and go, the Creative Writing club has been implementing seasonal, and specifically holiday-themed, activities into their meetings.

For Halloween, the club decorated cookies, at Thanksgiving, a writing prompt centered around giving thanks was  and most recently, at their Tuesday, Nov. 6 meeting, members were given “Secret Santa” partners to write stories for.

According to sophomore club president Grace Johnson, these holiday activities “get the creative juices flowing” among club members.

Johnson said the holiday activities are beneficial to the Creative Writing club because they help to strengthen the writing abilities of its members.

“I think it makes [club members] have a deeper meaning of what the holiday is,” Johnson said. “When you give them [an idea] and they have to think about it and write it down, that helps with them putting their thoughts into words.”

In comparison, junior activities coordinator Graham Wilhauk said that the holiday activities have been met with enthusiasm from club members thus far.

“I think they’re very fun to do and I think they’ve been very successful so far,” Wilhauk said.

In addition to an entertaining aspect, the holiday activities also provide opportunities for the Creative Writing club to grow closer, according to Wilhauk.

“I think they strengthen it a lot,” Wilhauk said. “They help us connect better and have us interact with each other more than just us sitting around and talking about writing. It’s a very fun way to incorporate the holidays into writing.”

Ultimately, Johnson hopes to continue the holiday activities throughout the rest of the year.

“It’s hard to come up with activities every two weeks and the holidays really help with [ideas],” Johnson said. “It just lets club members celebrate the holiday with someone other than their family and friends.”
