Gov. Sam Brownback and other lawmakers were present at a rally gathered on the Statehouse steps in Topeka, Kan. on Monday, Jan. 23 to support Kansas legislation meant to lower abortion rates.
The Fetal-Pain Bill, which passed in the 2011 session and illegalizes abortions after 21 weeks unless the mother’s life is at risk, was one of several laws the crowd showed support for. Other legislation placed limitations on abortion-inducing drugs and abortion clinics.
Mary Kay Culp, the executive director of Kansans for Life, organized the rally. According to an interview with the Kansas City Star, Culp would like to see legislation passed to protect pharmacists who refuse to sell drugs they don’t agree with morally.
“We see the public agreeing with us,” Culp said.
However, Culp claimed Kansans for Life would not push for the passing of personhood bill to illegalize abortion, due to the risk of forcing a Supreme Court decision on the issue. A personhood bill has been introduced in the Kansas Legislature to be discussed this year.
