Blog: Culture Consultant fangirls over Rebel Wilson

After high school, Australian born actress Rebel Wilson became a Youth Ambassador for Australia and was placed in South Africa, where she later contracted malaria. After becoming very ill, she began hallucinating in the hospital. This hallucination entailed Wilson becoming an actress and winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards where she says she gave an “acceptance rap” (watch her explain it here). This experience inspired her to begin acting, and I thank God for that.

Let me just say; Rebel Wilson is hilarious and she is going to be huge. After doing some work in Australia, Wilson came to Hollywood to start a career in the United States. She soon got her big break with her role of Brynn in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids. She had few lines, but each time she opened her mouth she was able to make practically the whole world crack up. To quote one of my favorite line of hers, which might remind you of who she is in case you don’t (but why wouldn’t you?) in the film, “I got a tattoo … He said, ‘It’s for free,’ and I said, ‘Sure.'”

After Bridesmaids, Wilson acted in What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which came out earlier this year, and she just recently played Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect, which opened on Friday, Oct. 5.

Pitch Perfect, a musical comedy about college a capella singing groups, showcases Wilson’s humor more so than some of her previous roles. Her character, Fat Amy, lets Wilson embrace her plus-size figure and use it at her own humorous expense. I saw the movie last weekend, and every time she spoke I just about lost it. She delivers her well-written, hilarious lines very well and comedy seems to come naturally for her. A lot of the time I don’t think she’s even intending to be funny, but something about her mannerisms just kills me.

From watching her movies and interviews, Wilson is definitely one celebrity I’d like to meet or go to the zoo with or something like that. Something about her seems so genuine and down-to-earth, and I can’t help but smile when I watch her act.

Look out, America, I have a feeling you’ll be seeing Rebel Wilson everywhere soon.
