Dog with a Blog: Last minute Halloween costumes

Nora Lucas, JagWire editor-in-chief

Halloween is just around the corner, and while you may or not be ready, your dog sure is. Imagine: a whole holiday centered around happy kids, neighborhood gatherings, and of course, free food. Greeting trick-or-treaters is one of my dog’s favorite activities of the year, so we usually dress her up with something cute and comfortable. I’ve decided to give a few ideas for last minute pet Halloween costumes so everyone can look just as fabulous as Winnie.

A hot dog costume is basic, but continues to impress crowds year after year. Either buy a costume from your local fine retailer, or make your own with velcro and pillows. The hot dog is simple: two buns on either side with your dog’s body in the middle. Construction paper ketchup and mustard are optional.

Next up is a Halloween classic: the mummy costume. Wrap your dog up in gauze (not too tight) from its rear all around the legs and head, then add some fake blood or red Sharpie for a realistic touch. This costume is better for dogs with short hair since long hair tends to get caught in the gauze, but if you can make it work, go for it.

Lastly, mixing in Latin inspiration for a pinata costume is perfect for Dia de Los Muertos. Simply find an old pet coat and cover it with layers of tissue paper. This can also be done by cutting out felt in the shape of your dog. This costume is a bit more time-consuming and only lasts a little while, but serves its purpose and is interesting to look at.

Even if you choose to not dress up your dog, Halloween is a great time to hang with your dependable pal outside. While you’re handing out candy or going trick-or-treating, take along your dog and get some fresh air. Have a fun and safe Halloween, my friends.
