Dr. Lowell Martinie, interim director of human resources
What does your job entail?
I wish I knew. In this position, your main responsibilities are as follows. About 25 percent of your position is recruiting and selecting all staff necessary for the district in all positions. That would be teachers, for example, principals, but that’s also classified staff like custodians and secretaries. The rest of your time, which is a large amount of your time, you work with the staff we already have. So, what I get to do is spend lots of my time meeting with them, supporting them, answering questions they might have and help them resolve issues. Thirdly, I work directly with principals in the district for the same reason because they have a lot of staff assigned to them, like at Mill Valley. I help them if they have issues. That’s primarily what I do. It’s a big job.
What do you like about your job?
This is my 42nd year in education and I’ve had the chance to be a teacher, principal — at all three levels actually — and a district administrator. The reason why I like to do this job is because it’s people oriented. I work with people all the time, in all areas, all types of positions, in all kinds of development, new people as well as people who have been around for a while, so I find that pretty intriguing actually.
What is something people might not know about you?
Well, probably the most interesting fact is that both my daughters are teachers. I told them when they graduated high school to do whatever they want. They watched me in the educational world and they decided that they wanted to do the same thing, so that makes me pretty proud.
