The JAGS-sponsored food drive ended Friday, March 8. The club collected about 250 food items to be donated, ending their efforts for Hartesters’ “Go for the Green” Food Drive.
JAGS executive board member Lindsey Kimbell hoped for a better outcome.
“We would have liked for…the bins to have been full,” Kimbell said. “It goes to Harvesters so it goes to people that need it.”
Harvesters has hosted the annual “Go for the Green” Food Drive for the last 27 years. A competition between schools, the drive aims to give kids in schools the chance to help out other kids who need it. The school that collects the most items receives the “Go for the Green” trophy, the option to host the 2013 “Go for the Green” kickoff party and free entry into the 2013 Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A total of 39 schools from the elementary to high school levels participated.
Kimbell said that an incentive was put in place, and yet the drive was not very successful.
“We decided that the winning seminar would get [a reward], but only if they donated a hundred cans or so.”
Club sponsor Jodi Ellis was disappointed that an incentive was necessary at all.
“I personally didn’t think it would be too hard to get 500 cans,” Ellis said. “I wish people would just give for the sake of giving.”
