Don’t be afraid to ask questions
High school can be scary, but don't let that hold back your curiosity
High school can be a confusing place, I won’t lie. There are a lot of things that even I don’t know and I’m going into my senior year. If someone tells me to go to the A-wing, I have to ask which one that is because if I don’t, I’ll end up in the B-wing. But here’s the thing: if you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask it. A lot of people probably have the same question as you and don’t want to ask about it. I know a lot of your teachers have been saying this for years, but it’s incredibly true.
It’s hard to raise your hand in class and ask a question without shaking or your voice cracking. I know you’re afraid to ask something stupid—we all are—but at some point you have to get over yourself. Asking questions is how we learn.
A lot of people I know just sit in class and never ask questions then continue on to complain about how they learned nothing in class. I know some subjects are really difficult, but if the teacher doesn’t know that you’re struggling then there’s nothing they can do. Teachers want to help. They love questions and they want their students to do well. If you’re truly too scared to ask in front of the class, then find a good time to go in before or after class. Seminar was created for this exact purpose. Teachers are our biggest resource for learning; use them.
Questions may come up a lot and teachers won’t be there forever. Regardless, you should still ask those around you. Outside of your teachers, your peers are going to be a huge resource for you throughout school. Questions extend far beyond the classroom. I became a basketball manager my sophomore year and I had never seen a full basketball game before in my life. I had so many questions and my friends on the team really helped me—even if I asked stupid questions.
Asking questions is the best advice I can give. It will do so, so much for you in life. We wouldn’t be where we are today without asking questions. After all, even Tobie Waldeck asks questions.
