Boys in freshmen PE classes received CPR training and certification Wednesday, April 1 – Thursday, April 2. Students learned the basic techniques of CPR for both adults and children, as well as the Heimlich maneuver and how to operate an automated external defibrillator.

To prepare students for real-life situations where CPR would be necessary, mannequins were provided for hands-on experience.

“[Each student] had a mannequin to learn the compressions and the correct breathing for both adult and children,” school nurse Heather Van Dyke said.

Freshman Logan Rissler said the instruction was beneficial and could aid him in the event of an emergency.

“If I see someone having a heart attack or something like that, then I will know what to do to help them,” Rissler said. “I feel like I know a lot more than I did at first.”

According to Van Dyke, the information taught gave students valuable skills that could potentially save someone’s life.

“[Students] can use their training at school, out in the community or any time an emergency happens,” Van Dyke said. “Cardiac arrests are very sudden, so it can happen at any time.”

The girls PE classes will receive CPR training Wednesday, April 9 – Thursday, April 10.
