On Friday, Jan. 24, the Girls’ basketball team defeated Shawnee Mission Northwest at Mill Valley High School with a score of 53-47. With this exciting victory, the team looks poised for a successful season.
Sophomore Riley Marshall shares her outlook on the future of the season.
“I believe this win will give us tons of momentum moving forward,” Marshall said. “So I think our season will be great and we will have many more wins to come.”
Though the game didn’t go without challenge, sophomore Alexa Short explains the toughest part of the game.
“It was very difficult playing with consistent energy for all four quarters, especially towards the end,” Short said. “When the score gets close like that, it makes it much harder to play with the same effort.”
Despite the challenge, senior Marissa Hoelting was very proud of how she and her team performed.
“Individually, I am most proud of my defense as I had to defend good shooters during the game,” Hoelting said. “But I am more proud of my team for pushing through and playing hard even in close situations against a good opponent.”
According to Marshall, the win was a direct result of the team’s hard work and preparation.
“To make sure we’re prepared, we do tons of things like drink our energy drinks, talk with the coach, and start our warm-ups,” Marshall said. “But we also study their tendencies and practice our plays beforehand, just to make sure we have a good understanding of the game.”
Hoelting explains why this season and the team mean so much to her.
“This year, the energy of the team is so great, it feels like I’m surrounded by people who genuinely want what’s best for me,” Hoelting said. “The girls on the team are so great, and the coaches do a good job of bringing out the best attributes in everyone by promoting this positivity.”
