The Mill Valley bowling team had mixed results on Feb. 11 at Park Lanes. The Jags’ girls’ team dominated the event, finishing in first place, while the boys’ team struggled with a last-place finish.
Sophomore Ella Diehl shares her thoughts on the win.
“I think our girls’ team had a great day and we would all be super excited to see that happen again at regionals,” Diehl said. “We all stayed confident throughout every match and rooted for each other no matter what.”
Junior Layla Gonzalez cites their win as a result of the team’s high energy.
“The key for today was joy. Everyone was in an amazing mood and it really made bowling easier and more fun,” Gonzalez said, “When we were happy, we got better results.”
According to Diehl, encouragement, high scores, and the baker game in which multiple bowlers combine to bowl together, made the competition go in Mill Valley’s favor.
“Averaging 184 points was definitely the key to our success, but also, the baker games worked really well today,” Diehl said. “Additionally, we’re always supporting and encouraging other teams and each other, which made the matches much more fun and helped with the results.”
Practices have also helped the teams develop their skills, shares Gonzalez.
“Our practices have greatly helped in preparing for this meet today,” Gonzalez said. “We have gotten to work on spares that are missed and have also worked on small things that have presented as issues in the past.”
For the boys, sophomore Lincoln Goertz also attributes the practices as a help.
“Practices have always been a key figure to any successes,” Goertz said. “They help us prepare for meets and practice the difficult aspects of the game, the things we normally struggle with.”
Goertz shares how he handled the tough moments of the competition.
“I handle the tough moments with next rep mentality,” Goertz said. “So if I make a mistake, or something doesn’t go our way, I just try to focus on my next opportunity rather than getting hung up on whatever went wrong.”
With mixed results but positive energy, both the girls’ and boys’ bowling teams leave the match with high hopes for the upcoming regional competition.
