Girls softball team extends record to 15-1

With a record of 15-1, the softball team prepares to travel to Emporia this weekend for the Emporia Classic Tournament.

“I think this tournament will definitely show our strengths and weaknesses as a team,” head coach Sarah Haub said. “It will certainly help us get ready for regionals.

Senior left outfielder Kelli Rutherford knows the upcoming tournament will be competitive for the team.

“We are playing against St. Thomas Aquinas high school,” Rutherford said. “I’m excited to play a good and competitive team.”

Haub hopes this weekend will be a good bonding experience.

“The girls will have a blast in Emporia, but it’s important they stay focused,” Haub said.

Besides preparing for Emporia, the team has been focused in practice so they can continue its winning streak.

“Our focus has been trying to have intensity and focusing on taking care of the ball,” Haub said. “We’ve also focused on pitch selection at the plate.”

Rutherford adds how important practice has been.

“We’ve been working on fielding and hitting stronger so we can make it to regionals and a run in state,” Rutherford said.

Haub attributes some of the success to how well the team has worked together.

“Our team meshes so well together both socially and on the field,” Haub said. “They all get along so well, which is nice.”
