Grammy recap

Last Sunday marked the 54th annual Grammy Awards. Just like any awards show, I knew the Grammys would get people talking, and I was eager to hear what people would be saying the next day. Overall, the show was entertaining, and I really enjoyed it. Though some parts bored me, several things really caught my attention, whether they are good or bad.

Red Carpet

If anything is viewed more than the awards themselves, it’s the pre-show coverage. I’m not going to pretend I can identify who was wearing what designer, but I can tell you that both Adele and Carrie Underwood looked great in more conservative, simple dresses. Rihanna also kept it classy and looked stunning in a black dress while she sported freshly bleached blonde hair. Fergie made a statement by donned a less traditional orange dress. Other stars, however, made statements in more unusual ways. Nicki Minaj arrived in a red cape escorted by a man dressed as the Pope. Had this concept not been linked to her performance later in the show, and if I weren’t a huge fan of Minaj, I’d be much more critical of this controversial fashion statement.

Performances

Forget the croaking old men; the clear highlight of the night was a tie between Rihanna and Coldplay’s duet and Minaj’s eerie but exciting performance. Rihanna sounded fantastic singing a slower version of her hit “We Found Love” as well as her part in “Princess of China,” a duet with Coldplay. Coldplay also went on to sing their popular song “Paradise.” Minaj’s performance of her new single “Starships” revolved around an exorcism and, though unusual, I loved every second of it. Move over, Gaga, Minaj is beginning to stake her claim. I’d also like to give a shout out to Katy Perry. Though her crimped blue bob was on the verge of a hot mess, her emotional performance of the new “Part of Me” sat well, considering all she has endured between ex-husband Russell Brand. And don’t forget Adele, whose vocal chords have recovered and sounded better than ever. No elaborate setup, background dancers, nothing. Her talent alone practically sold the show.

Awards

Enough about the attire and performances—this whole thing is centered on awards. Basically, Adele nearly snagged every Grammy award hoarded behind the stage; I’m not mad. Aside from Adele, Sunday was also a good night for some of my favorites, Kanye West, Skrillex and Taylor Swift. To view the complete list of winners, click here.
