Here comes the bride (with divorce papers)

After filing for divorce on Monday, Oct. 31, the news of Kim Kardashian’s split from basketball player Kris Humphries spread like wildfire. Their quick marriage, lasting only 72 days, has now been made the victim of countless anti-Kardashian remarks.

I’m not wearing a shirt that says ‘I love Kim Kardashian’ or anything, but I have to back her up on this situation. It’s extremely irritating to know that people have the audacity to ridicule a marriage, or lack of therefore, regardless of whoever it may be between. For no reason should a broken-up couple be used to poke fun at. Believe it or not, people take things like marriage seriously. Kim is no exception.

From lasting hashtags on Twitter such as #ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage to hearing Kim be ridiculed herself, the harassment needs to stop. News flash: while they are beautiful, wealthy and outrageously famous, the Kardashians are people too. Though they may be best known for their looks and money, that doesn’t mean that’s all they are. If you are using the girl’s riches against her in this case, then that’s just wrong. A part-time business woman, Kim is obviously smart to some degree.

One of the most ridiculous claims I’ve heard is that Kim is a “gold digger.” I’m positive Kim has enough money of her own; why would she need to marry a man to fill that nonexistant gap? As for the gifts for the $10 million wedding (which reportedly paid for itself), they will be given to charity, according to ABC News. Any so called “gold digger” would hold on to those babies–not Kim.

As for taking marriage seriously, Kim was previously wed to music producer Damon Thomas for four years. If she has the ability to invest even that span of time into a marriage, we know she can do it. This failed attempt at a life-long commitment is only one bad experience that Kim can learn from.

While this quick marriage (and relationship–they only met each other close to a year ago) has been viewed as a joke, people need to be realistic. People and connections change. The sad truth: people are filing for divorce every single day, no matter how long the marriage. Kim and Kris, now in that same pool of people, only stick out because of how well known they are. For more input from Kim on this subject, read her most recent blog entry.
