Homecoming: over-hyped?
Too many people put the Homecoming dance on a pedestal; the main focus should be on school spirit.
Homecoming: the best and worst week of the year. On one hand, it is spirited, fun and energetic. The atmosphere throughout the school week is great, and the dance is enjoyable. Each spirit day of the week is quirky and competitive, and the Homecoming game is packed, with every student excited about the unveiling of their king and queen. But if you have not been asked to the dance, you may be questioning, “what’s the point?”
Then Sunday morning rolls around and you just so happen to log onto Facebook. This is the beginning of the problem. Three hours pass, and you have scrolled through every student’s pictures before the dance, while silently crying into a tub of Ben and Jerry’s. Even if you had fun that night somewhere other than the dance, you still have a small tinge of jealousy. Why are you getting so emotional because of a silly, over-hyped dance?
It is not bad to have a good time at the dance and want to look nice, but shouldn’t the excessive spending and over-planned ways to ask someone be used for Prom? I feel like people are getting way too caught up in what Hollywood has made Homecoming out to be. We all need to take a step back and realize, in the grand scheme of things, it is not such a big deal.
