jagPRIDE hosts National Drug Fact Awareness Week party
Trivia competition hosted by jagPRIDE informs students about the risks of drugs
In recognition of National Drug Fact Awareness Week, jagPRIDE hosted a trivia and refreshments party on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The event included cookies, drinks, a photo booth, prize drawings and a trivia competition. Students travelled from station to station answering trivia questions about drug facts.
“Students don’t usually listen to stupid little activites, but we thought if we got some food and prizes out they would come and listen to us and understand the dangers of drugs,” jagPRIDE member sophomore Lilly Lutz said.
Junior Cody Deas said that though he originally chose to attend the event just for fun, he became interested in learning more about National Drug Fact Awareness Week.
“I came for the refreshments, but then I saw there was a trivia competition, and I’m pretty competitive,” Deas said. “I thought I knew quite a bit about drug facts and all, but some of these questions are stumping me. I want to know what the answers are now.”
Deas said events like these should be held more often.
“I think they are important; it builds commraderie,” Deas said. “It helps school spirit as well as boosting awareness of jagPRIDE, which I personally don’t hear much about.”
Lutz said she hopes students left this event more informed on drug facts.
“I think it’s important to get this kind of information out,” Lutz said. “Most students don’t realize that drugs can ruin their lives.”
This is Katherine's third year on staff, and she is excited to work on the newspaper with a great staff this year. She is also involved in band, quiz bowl and literary magazine. When she is not in the journalism room or practicing an instrument, she is probably daydreaming about being in Disney World.
