JAGS club promotes community service

JAGS, the school’s community service club, is entering one of the busiest seasons of the year for volunteer work. The club volunteers around the community once or twice a month at various locations. Among those locations is volunteering at Harvester’s once a month until January.

Club membership is currently around 25, but varies based upon students’ other obligations. JAGS sponsor Jodi Ellis said the club gives the chance to receive community service hours for students who are not obligated to volunteer.

“It gives kids an opportunity to be involved in community service when they aren’t a senior in the community service class,” Ellis said.

Senior JAGS leader committee member Zach Carey agrees.

“[The club] represents a positive message,” Carey said. “We are kind of small and people don’t really know about us, but it’s good…to give back to the community.”

Future events for the club include the Great Yard Rake-Over, occurring Saturday, Nov. 5, and the biggest event of the year, the Adopt-a-Family event and fundraiser that JAGS works on until Christmas. The major fundraiser is when staff members and the students each adopt a family and provide presents and various gifts for the families in need. Carey said the club is open for all who wish to join.

“Come to a meeting and see what it is all about,” Carey said. “See if you want to help and if it is something you want to get involved in.”
