A 40-24 win over BVSW Timberwolves improves the Jaguars to 3-0
In the third game of the season on Friday Sept. 16, Mill Valley defeated the Blue Valley Southwest Timberwolves 40-24.
The Timberwolves took a late first quarter lead with a field goal, putting them up 3-0.
The Jaguars quickly struck back with a field goal from sophomore kicker Jack Matchette, tying the game at 3-3.
Entering the game, co-offensive coordinator Mike Strack had confidence in his team.
“We felt really good about our scheme and our plan,” Strack said. “I thought we had a really good week at practice which always makes me feel good.”
Senior wide receiver Ben Hartman scored a touchdown and successfully completed the two point conversion. This gave the Jags a 11-3 lead early in the second quarter.
After a fumble recovery, BVSW scored a touchdown, but the extra point attempt was blocked. The Jags remained ahead 11-9.
Senior defensive back Joel Donn thinks that while the team did good, there is still a lot to improve on.
“We stepped up in times of need, but ultimately we need to get back and put in work. We’ve got a tough one next week,” Donn said.
Strack agrees that the team still has room for improvement.
“[We need to work on] just really our mental focus,” Strack said. “We had a lot of tiny little mistakes so that’ll turn into big mistakes.”
After a 22 yard catch and a 16 yard catch by Hartman, senior linebacker Brady Garrison scored a touchdown with 6:49 left in the half. A failed two point conversion gave the Jaguars a 17-9 lead.
A field goal by sophomore kicker Jake Ashford extended the Jags lead to 20-9 heading into the half.
On the second half opening kick off, Donn returned the kick for a touchdown. The Jaguars took a 27-9 lead after a successful extra point by Matchette.
Late in the third quarter, BVSW scored a touchdown and successfully completed a two point conversion to bring the score to 27-17 Jags.
A touchdown by junior wide receiver Evan Rice and extra point by Matchette gave the Jags a 34-17 lead.
The Timberwolves quickly came back with a touchdown to bring the score to 34-24 Jags late in the fourth quarter.
With one minute left, sophomore wide receiver Logan Talley scored a touchdown to extend the Jaguars lead to 40-24, which was the final score of the game.
Junior quarterback Brody Flaming has confidence in the team as the season moves forward.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do that’s for sure, but I have full confidence in our team to pull out a win next week,” Flaming said.
The Jaguars will play at home against Blue Valley High School Friday, Sept. 23.
