Jaguars remain undefeated after 27-7 victory
The Jaguars become 4-0 after their 27-7 victory over the Tonganoxie High School Chieftains
The Jaguars came out victorious in a battle between two undefeated teams, beating the Tonganoxie High School Chieftains 27-7 on Friday, Sept. 27.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Jaguars put the first points on the board off of a 55-yard pick six by senior linebacker TJ Phillips. After senior kicker Connor Mills made the extra point, the score was 7-0, Jaguars, with 11:46 to play in the first half.
Phillips said that once there were points on the board, the team found its momentum.
“We knew Tonganoxie improved a lot from last season, so we were just trying to continue to improve on both offense and defense,” Phillips said. “But once we had the first touchdown, we just went uphill from there.”
Shortly after, the Jaguar defense held the Chieftains, forcing them to punt the ball. After four consecutive first downs by junior quarterback Ty Bruce, junior linebacker Tyler Garrison carried the ball one yard for a touchdown. The extra point was good by Mills, making the score 14-0, Jaguars, with 6:49 left in the first half.
Minutes into the second half, the Jaguars received another punt from the Chieftains. After many small-yard gains by Bruce, he finished the drive off with an eight-yard carry for a Jaguar touchdown. Mills’ extra point was good, putting the score at 21-0, Jaguars, with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter.
To start the fourth quarter, sophomore wide receiver Christian Jegen ran 50 yards on a punt return for a touchdown. The extra point was missed, making the score 27-0, Jaguars, with 11:38 left in the game.
The Jaguars were just short of a shutout, when the Chieftains scored on a three-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good, putting the score at 27-7 with 1:14 left in the game.
To ensure that teams do not score at the last minute in the future, Phillips said that conditioning would help.
“The defense was on the field a lot the second half,” Phillips said. “Guys were getting tired so we just need to continue to do more conditioning to help with shutouts.”
This win put the Jaguars at 4-0. Their next game will be the 2013 Homecoming game, Friday, Oct. 4, against Bonner Springs at 7 p.m.
