Jazz Band teaches elementary students through performance
Horizon Elementary classes learn about jazz music from Jazz Band
After traveling to Horizon Elementary on Wednesday, Feb. 19, the Jazz Band performed for the fourth and fifth grade classes. The band played six songs, including “Birdland” and “Come Fly With Me.” Along with the group songs, juniors Clayton Kistner and Eric Marquardt and senior Joe Vincent performed solos.
At intermission, band instructor Deb Steiner spoke about jazz basics, such as the differences between certain trumpet mutes and between jazz instruments.
According to sophomore percussionist Cole Griggs, the reason for the trip to Horizon was to teach the kids about jazz and the way Jazz Band works.
“It was cool to show the kids how jazz music is different from other music,” Griggs said. “We showed them all the different instruments and played a couple tunes for them. I really enjoyed it.
The jazz band will perform on Wednesday, Feb. 26 for the Incoming Parent Night and again on Monday, March 3 in its spring concert.
