Mill Creek Animal Hospital provides award-winning veterinary care

A decade of winning the "Best of Shawnee" award has proved that the surrounding area is confident in MCAH to take care of their pets

Mill Creek Animal Hospital, located at 13428 W 62nd Terrace, has been serving the Shawnee community by providing veterinary care to their patients for 27 years. While Mill Creek was originally opened by Dr. Mark Mears in 1990, Dr. Martin Gilmore gained ownership of the clinic in 2009. In addition to performing veterinary services, MCAH also offers grooming and boarding.

Dr. Gilmore received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. in Immunopathology from Kansas State University. Since then, he and his employees have been committed to caring for pets in the Shawnee area. According to Dr. Gilmore, the aspect of ownership that matters most is the contribution his business has on the surrounding area.

“The best part about being a successful small business owner is that you get to give good jobs to 26 other people,” Dr. Gilmore said. “I get to have a positive impact in my own community as well.”

Dr. Gilmore believes the most rewarding accomplishment the hospital has achieved is earning the Best of Shawnee Award for the past decade. The staff attributes the success of their business to their dedication to the profession.

“No matter what role we hold as an employee, everyone shows up to work every day thinking about what we can do to make our patient’s life the best and to do our best to provide the owners with the best service they’ve ever had,” Dr. Gilmore said. “Clearly, it’s working because the general public thinks highly enough of us to vote us the best experience they’ve had for over a decade in a row.”

Dr. Gilmore is happy with the effect the award has on the clinic.

“It reinforces that what we do is working and people know that we care,” Dr. Gilmore said.

Office manager Wendy Kovac says the clinic’s approximate 50 clients per day and high ratings led to the veterinary hospital receiving the Best of Shawnee Award.

“The Best of Shawnee Award represents compassionate employees and great customer service.” Kovac said.

Dr. Ryan Church has been a part of the Mill Creek team since 2008. For Dr. Church, the aspect that solely sets their team apart from other animal clinics in the area is their fast-acting and effective service they provide to their patients.

“What sets us apart [from other animal clinics], more than anything, is the service we provide to our clients,” Dr. Church said. “If you call us with a problem, we are likely to get you taken care of the same day.”

Dr. Church said he is confident that if a client needs help, they will do everything they can to get that client taken care of as soon as possible. The staff is always thinking of ways to make the customer’s lives better and easier.

“[It’s] something that we take a lot of pride in,” Dr. Church said. “[Our] biggest thing is dedication to giving good service to the people in the community.”

Junior Jacob Hoffman has been working at the Mill Creek Animal Hospital for the past six months. Hoffman enjoys working at the clinic because of the amazing opportunity he gets to experience working with animals.

“The environment can be really relaxed, but really chaotic sometimes when it gets busy,” Hoffman said. “Other employees are really nice and we can all relate [with each other] because we all share a similar love for animals.”

The award-winning service and care the staff at MCAH provides to their patients has made them highly favored among the Shawnee community.

One of Mill Creek’s receptionists, Debbie Sharp, has been working there for 17 years.

“Our mission statement ‘Mill Creek Animal Hospital is dedicated to an ethical, professional approach to providing compassionate, quality care.’” Sharp said. “I take pride in providing good customer service and making sure that our pets are well taken care of as well as their owners.”
