Thirty NHS students walked the runway this Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Natalie M. Fashion Show in Overland Park. Students raised over $4200, which will fund NHS’ outreach endeavors.
For the past eight years, the Natalie M. Foundation has put on a fashion show where local school organizations can participate in raising money to support themselves. It is the largest prom fashion show in the country, including 12 different designers.
Senior Erika Kringen enjoyed the event because of the positive atmosphere.
“I think it went very well,” Kringen said. “Everyone had fun because you got to put on a pretty dress and all the guys got to put on nice tuxes and you just got to walk the runway. There was music and it was just a fun time.”
Kringen and senior Kaitlyn Moore served on the teen fashion board this year, working to plan and promote the fashion show within the school.
“We researched designers that were going to be in the show,” Moore said. “We made Pinterest boards, and we got to design our dream prom dress. Then, before the show, we actually got to meet the designers that we researched.”
Though it might have been more responsibility, Moore said working on the board paid off in the long run.
“Because I was on the teen fashion board, I won a free prom dress and got to walk down the runway with all the designers. That was a really cool part of it,” Moore said.
Of the $4,200 raised, will go to making goodie bags for honor roll students, according to NHS sponsor Kristen Chavez.
“We’re not 100 percent sure what to do with the rest of the money, but I was shocked that we raised that much,” Chavez said.
Chavez explained a couple suggestions from students, including the idea of a self-defense class or a donation to the Ron Wimmer Student Fund.
“It’s a win-win,” Chavez said. “The kids get five community service hours, and our organization has funds to actually do some things that we want, because this is the only fundraiser we do,” Chavez said. “In the past, the money hasn’t always gone to us. Now, [we can] have our barbecue, do our induction ceremony and be able to do the goodie bags for the whole school.”
