Students interested in anime, a form of Japanese animation, now have an outlet in the form of a new club called Anime Otuko.
Junior Kelsey Winscott and senior Cynthia Shi started the club because of their shared interest in anime.
“[Cynthia and I] both loved anime, and other people at our lunch table did too, so we decided to start a club,” Winscott said. “We thought it was a good way to bring together a lot of different cultures.”
The club meets to discuss and watch anime, and occasionally holds movie nights at members’ houses. The club also recently went to Naka-Kon, an anime convention at the Overland Park Convention Center, and plans on going to the Greater Kansas City Japan Festival in October.
Winscott explained that one thing she loves about the club is how many different people are in the club.
“I love how diverse our group is,” Winscott said. “There are so many different people from all different groups.”
The club is always open to new members according to Winscott.
“If you love anime, you’re welcome here,” Winscott said. “If you love anything about Japanese culture, you’ll find a home here.”
Anime Otuko currently meets on Monday mornings in Room A-203. You can find them on Facebook at Anime Otuko Mill Valley.

Anime “Otuko”? Now that’s an interesting name for an anime club, hehe 😛
It’s good to know that you guys are having fun. I believe there was an anime club in the University that I went to. I considered joining them… but I was always “busy” with university work instead of having a life.
Now-days I try to watch as much anime as I can, but in the original Japanese. For instance, I’m watching Keroro Gunsou right now, in raw Japanese. Right now I only understand a word here and there, but that’s how we improve our listening skills… by listening a LOT!! 😀
Thanks for sharing this info. Once again, hope you guys are having fun in the club! 😀
