Her face and tunes may be unrecognizable but that’s quickly changing; Lana Del Rey is making a quick rise to the top. Del Rey, 25, is a New York native who has brought something entirely new to the table. Her humble story of striving for musical opportunities provides a clear depiction of just how talented and worthy of fame she is.
While Del Rey previously released a three-track EP in October of 2008 and the 2010 album Lana Del Rey A.K.A. Lizzy Grant (Lana Del Rey is only a pseudo name—her real name is actually Elizabeth Grant), her most recent album titled Born To Die, released in January, has gained the most momentum. Next to a vast amount of press, Del Rey performed on Saturday Night Live on Jan. 14 where she received mixed reviews from critics.
But who cares what the critics have to say? Her music isn’t intended to be the counterpart of a cheesy stage spectacular. The best description for it is indie pop. It’s dreary and deep enough to put you in a melancholy mood but upbeat enough to make you feel at ease. Her mellow voice is golden and is certainly enough to get her by. Perfectly matching her classy, retro-esque clothing style, Del Rey’s voice is a smooth throwback to the old fashioned greats whose raw abilities need not rely on synthetic beats or Auto-Tune.
After hearing so much talk of Del Rey and allowing her hypnotizing songs to grow on me, I finally got my hands on a copy of her latest album and I am absolutely hooked. Whether it’s falling asleep, driving in the car or doing homework, I have Born To Die playing. I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of Born To Die (you won’t be disappointed) or checking out some of her older material on YouTube. I would give you the titles of a few of my favorite tracks from Born To Die, but it’s way too hard to pick only a couple.
