Reel Talk: Movies are pretty boring right now
February 18, 2016
I’ve been away for a few weeks. I didn’t write a blog one week because I was lazy, but another was because I was in Spain.
One thing I will say about Spain is that it is absolutely beautiful. I tried to watch movies surrounding Spain before I left, but I could not find any mainstream movies. So, instead, I watched “The Cheetah Girls 2” over and over and strutted down the street to their songs. I recommend that movie; it was easily the best movie of the franchise. I would also recommend visiting Barcelona and Madrid — It was a lot of fun.
Anyway, it’s that time of year — January and February — where all the Oscar movies have come out, and now almost all of the movies coming out are super boring and no one goes to see them.
Notable exceptions: “Deadpool,” which made over $120 million at the box office, a first for an R-rated superhero movie. It also got positive reviews and has supposedly ushered in a new age of superhero movies. Personally, I hope so. I enjoy charismatic superheroes more than the next person, but I’m getting bored with the same formula in the same movie over and over.
“Kung Fu Panda 3” also made a lot of money at the box office — a hefty sum of $265 million — with pretty good reviews for a third movie. I forgot there was a second one. I also have not seen both movies listed above. Even I’m behind on my movie watching.
The last movie I saw was “The Revenant” a few weeks ago. Since then, no movies have come out that I have had to see. And that probably won’t change until the summer blockbusters start coming out.
Oscars are in a week and a half, so I’ll definitely be predicting that next week. Until then, I’ll try to catch a movie this weekend.

As an avid movie watcher and all around lover of film production in general, I take issue with this article. ‘Reel Talk: Movies are pretty boring right now’ served little purpose other than a short review of a not so decent sequel to a not so decent movie (Cheetah Girls 2) and a recomendation to visit Spain. The title of the article implies that the movies listed will be boring and not woth the watch, but all the movies listed in the article were praised (Kung Fu Panda 3 and Deadpool). Now I have seen both of those movies, but the author of this article has not! To me, it a lot more sense to actually watch the movies that you are going to be mentioning in your article about how movies this time of year are boring.
As a member of the MV journalism department (broadcast) I understand the pressure of having to meet deadlines, but this article seemed very rushed and lacked any real content.
