The robotics team competed at the FIRST Greater Kansas City Regional Competition at Hale Arena in Kansas City on Thursday, March 21-23. Twenty-four schools were divided into groups of three. Junior Alyssa Hobson was proud to have made it so far.
“I think we did fairly well since we made it into the [semi] final round of the tournament,” Hobson said.
On day one of the competition, team brought home the Innovation in Control Award. According to FIRST, this award “celebrates an innovative control system or application of control components-electrical, mechanical or software- to provide unique machine functions.” The team earned the award after its robot climbed to the top of the pyramid and dropped in blue Frisbees into the top goal, one of only 5-6 robots in the nation to do so, according to the event’s announcer.
On the second day, the team was picked by teams 1982, Cougar Robotics from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and Team 2346, Archbishop O’Hara High School from Kansas City, and became the 8th seeded alliance partners to go into the semi-final matches. The team did not qualify for the final rounds of competition.
“I think we did very well, we won an award for the programming that we used,” Hobson said. “Even though the end result was not what we expected, I would say that I am still very proud of our team.”
