Blog: Saying “adios” to my awkward stage
Once upon a time, there was an adorable, naive, nearsighted five year old (it’s not me, I swear) who wanted eyeglasses more than anything, for no freaking reason at all. Maybe it was fate, or maybe it was her terrible case of a astigmatism, but she got them. However, she got way more than she bargained for and ended up having to wear them for ten years: yes, a whole decade, giving new meaning to the phrase “awkward childhood.”
Oh, and it was me actually. I lied, deal with it.
Well it was, until this very past Saturday, which will eternally be remembered as the self-proclaimed ending of my awkward stage: the day that I, Adrianna Talavera, finally got contact lenses.
However, its been three days and I’m already missing my glasses. They were like my thing, my signature, ya know? Besides the fact that I’m like one of four Mexicans at Mill Valley, they were what made me unique, as far as appearance anyway. There’s a real love-hate relationship between my contacts and I. As someone with a passion for doing my makeup, I couldn’t be happier to finally wear makeup and not have it hidden by bulky black frames. I could definitely do without those weird stares I get when people are trying to tell what’s different, though. Hello, people. I’ve gone to school with some of you since the second grade, how can you not tell the difference? Is this how Clark Kent felt?
The struggle is definitely real with these contacts.
Senior Adri Talavera is entering her third year on the JagWire staff, this year as the opinions editor and co-business manager.
