The school’s academic trivia club, Scholars Bowl, hosted their own varsity Scholars Bowl tournament Wednesday, Jan. 15. Scholars Bowl tournaments include teams from over 20 schools that compete against each other in quizzes on subjects like foreign language, language arts, science and health, social studies, mathematics, fine arts and current events.
To prepare for hosting this tournament, the Scholars Bowl team needed to create their own unique questions for each team and each round, which they’ve been working on since November. Junior Ana Rios, a member of Scholars Bowl, read off the questions to teams during the rounds.
“There were probably hundreds of questions to read through [before the tournament], so that was stressful,” Rios said. “[I also had to read] through all of the questions to make sure I knew how to pronounce them, along with fixing questions that made no sense or had grammar errors.”
The Scholars Bowl team also needed to set up all of the classrooms they used for each round. Sophomore Rylee Slaven explains what needs to be done before hosting a tournament.
“It was a little stressful getting everything prepared because you get binders full of every single question, and those have to be in the exact order because if it’s not it messes up [the whole round],” Slaven said. “There were a whole bunch of different papers, and we had to set up the rooms before everyone got here, so that was stressful.”
Sophomore Alice Holting enjoyed getting to be a part of the meet.
“It was fun to watch a varsity meet because I’m on JV so I wouldn’t normally be able to,” Holting said. “The questions were also interesting because they were made by the team.”
School psychologist and assistant coach for the Scholars Bowl team Stacy Miller, enjoyed being a part of hosting this tournament and is excited for hosting future Scholars Bowl tournaments.
“[I enjoyed] hearing positive feedback from everybody that came, it was good to hear they enjoyed the questions and they had fun,” Miller said. “Our goal is to make sure the tournament runs smoothly and that everyone has a good experience. Next year we’ll make sure we have more time to prepare everything.”
