Softball team prepares for first game

With the first softball game tonight the team is busy practicing for their first game.

Head coach Sarah Haub is optimistic about the new team.

“I’m most excited about seeing this particular group coming together as a team,” Haub said.

Senior outfielder Kelli Rutherford agrees the team looks strong.

“I think our team looks good and we should go far this season,” Rutherford said.

Haub is pleased with what she has already seen in practice.

“So far I’ve seen great leadership [in the seniors], they are so helpful and communicate well,” Haub said. “They help the younger members of our team and they have great attitudes.”

Haub is optimistic about possibility of post season this year. Last season the team did not win league and had a 16-6 record.

“I think with their hard work and talent, it will take us to post season play,” Haub said.

Practices until the first game will focus on preparing for game situations.

“Basically we are trying to prepare for every situation in games that come,” Haub said. “The girls on the varsity team are pretty knowledgeable about softball.”

Rutherford knows practices are important.

“We practice everyday and we work on fielding and hitting,” Rutherford said. “Practice is also helping our team improve on game situations.”

The first game is tonight against Basehor-Linwood High School.
