Sophomore rides unicycle for fun
Sophomore Corey Holt takes a unique approach to cycling
As sophomore Corey Holt prepared to bunny hop his unicycle on Saturday, Feb. 8, he slowly increased the height that the wheel came off the ground. Corey mastered riding the unicycle by riding it everyday after school beginning in August and every Saturday after.
“I ride a lot on the weekends and anytime I have free time,” Corey said. “It just was a challenge and I wanted to try it.”
Corey’s interest in unicycling began after seeing a YouTube video of someone else riding one. He bought his first unicycle online, determined to learn how to ride it.
“I guess you call it trial and error. [You start by] just getting on it and trying to ride and then you fall off and then you get back on,” Corey said.
Corey’s sister, sophomore Danielle Holt, admired Corey’s dedication to his unicycling.
“I think it’s cool that he learned how to do it so fast,” Danielle said. “If he liked it and he wanted to do it, he would stick to it and learn how to do it in a few days.”
After buying his first unicycle, Corey realized he needed to buy another one solely for tricks, which included the bunny hop and the unispin. He bought his second bike in December for $350.
“Each trick builds on [the bunny hop]. You start with small tricks and then you work your way up to bigger tricks,” Corey said. “If I don’t land [the trick] properly, the pedal can slam against my shin.” Though Corey showed enthusiasm to pursue a future in unicycling, Danielle believed it was just a phase.
“I think it’s just a fun hobby he likes to do,” Danielle said. “I think he will move on and will find new things that he is interested in.”
