With spring sports starting up, the track and field season is underway. Sophomore varsity thrower Kellyne Weathers is well equipped for the competition.
“In the offseason I practiced as often as I could,” Weathers said. “I think by practicing so much over the last year is going to greatly help me this season.”
In the last year, Weathers practiced shot put and discus. In the summer, she attended a throwing camp at the University of Kansas, where she learned more techniques and received help from the college athletes.
Last year, Weathers placed in one varsity meet and received a varsity letter. This year, she hopes to go to league and regionals, and if everything goes well, qualify for state.
“I’m really looking forward to breaking through and making it to state this year,” Weathers said.
Weathers also holds high hopes for the girls throwing team as a whole, specifically shot put. Last year the team did well, sending one individual to state. Weathers expects a couple throwers to qualify for state this year.
“This year, we have depth,” Weathers said. “With one girl returning who made it to state last year, I expect two of us to make it this year.”
