While many students play sports to fill their free time, senior Zach Cheser and Zane Lauer fill their time with music. Along with creating music individually, they also play in a band with seniors Kai McGarry and Brayden Evans. Each of them started in a music class in elementary school and decided through time that music was something they wanted to pursue in the future.
Chesser explains his entry into the music industry and where he first found his love for it.
“Music is something that I have done since I was a kid. Although I first started music as a hobby until recently,” Chesser said. “I realized that music was something I wanted to do in my future.”
Lauer expresses how music is incorporated into his daily life.
“I live and breathe music. I wake up and turn on songs that were recommended by friends, and before I close my eyes at night, I go through pieces of music that I have memorized,” Lauer said. “I believe the most important par
t is attentive listening: it is what separates the people with real talent from the people who aspire.”
With his drive for music, Chesser describes his future goals in music.
“After high school, I am hoping to go to music school in college,” Chesser said. “I am hoping to become a professional musician one day to continue creating music.”
Lauer also outlines his future goals and how he decided what his true calling was.
“Originally, I wanted to become a music theorist professor, but I realized that job is difficult with the dwindling jobs at the collegiate level,” Lauer said. “I talked to my director and decided that a job as a K-12 choir and band teacher would be best for me. I love all the work and have always wanted to teach music, and this way, I can watch kids grow into wonderful musicians.”
Expressing his final thoughts, Chesser illustrates the importance of continued practice.
“I believe no one can ever spend too much time practicing to get better,” Chesser said. “Anyone with the right mindset and mentality can get into music and become good with dedicated practice.”
Finally, Lauer indicates his great love for music and why he has such a passion for it.
“I believe music is a genius that you can feel; we all know about Einstein, Newton and Da Vinci, but no formula or concept can be felt like music,” Lauer said. “I know, because of my intelligence, if I wished to, I could be a great physicist, chemist, engineer, doctor or painter, but music is an art that works with us in all ways. You understand by existing near it. I love genius, and I love more to be able to share it.”
