Students participate in Kick Butts Day volleyball tournament
Ninth annual tournament raises money for health classroom and American Cancer Society
The ninth annual Kick Butts Day volleyball was hosted by health teacher Amy McClure on Wednesday, March 26. The cost for entry into the tournament was $1, and the proceeds will be used for educating students on the dangers of tobacco in McClure’s health class and will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Each year, McClure applies for a grant from the Tobacco-Free Kids Coalition. The grant pays for the T-shirts given out at the event, which are created by technology teacher Patricia Brock’s Computer Graphics class. McClure organizes the event with her seminar in accordance with Kick Butts Day, which was over spring break on Wednesday, March 19.
“I like to do it because I feel like it gives kids a tobacco-free environment,” McClure said. “As a health teacher, I just think it’s important to promote that a tobacco-free lifestyle is healthy for teens. Another reason too is that my grandpa died from pancreatic cancer, which was because he started smoking at an early age and smoked his entire life.”
