Super Fun Night or just fun night?
Despite a few flaws, this new ABC sitcom is worthwhile to watch
Last night, as I clicked through the channels on my television, I came across a show called Super Fun Night on ABC. I had heard a bit about the show before, so I decided to watch it. Although it didn’t live up to the “super” in its title, I still see potential.
The show stars and is written/produced by Rebel Wilson, best known for her role as Fat Amy in the movie Pitch Perfect. Wilson plays Kimmie Boubier, an awkward worker at a law firm who spends every Friday night with her friends, Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira) and Marika (Lauren Ash). The show follows the three friends’ quest to find love and a good time. However, they are consistently interrupted by Kimmie’s coworkers; the rude Kendall (Kate Jenkinson) and her workplace crush Richard (Kevin Bishop).
For me, the humor was definitely there. Wilson brings the jokes she was known for in Pitch Perfect, and it works for this show as well. Ash and Lapira also prove to be funny at times, but the spotlight is definitely on Wilson. The jokes may not fare as well with all viewers, but they definitely do have an audience. The acting is fair, but not anything to praise for. Though the show is not original, it does present its plot with a bit of a spin.
Altogether, Super Fun Night is a sitcom to look out for. While I don’t see it becoming a major hit just yet, it could be with time. And I’ll be clearing my schedule on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. because Wilson and her friends will make it a night that is, although not super, still pretty fun.
