The girls and boys track teams recieved four first place medals at the Shawnee Mission West Invitational
The girls track team placed second and boys track team placed third in the Shawnee Mission West Invitational on Friday, April 25 against Shawnee Mission West High School, Olathe Northwest High School, Shawnee Mission East High School, Olathe North High School, Leavenworth High School, Blue Valley North High School, and Turner High School.
Junior Kyal Long said the difficult competition in the meet helped the team see what it needs to improve on.
“[The meet brought] a lot of higher competition,” Long said. “It’s more competitive because a lot of good schools [were] at that meet. It really shows as a team where you stand, how good you are and what you need to work on.”
Personally, the meet disappointed Long because he popped his knee in the middle of his 400 meter run and struggled to finish the rest of his races. Other students were also hurt during the meet, so Long felt that their injuries effected the results.
“For the team, [the meet] went OK,” Long said. “A couple of kids got sick or hurt them self. I hurt myself in the 400 [meter run] so I wasn’t able to compete as well, [which was] my first race.”
The students that placed first in the meet include:
Girls Long Jump – Freshman Kasey Meeks
Boys 800 Meter Run – Junior Kurt Loevenstein
Girls Shot Put – Junior Madi Holland
Boys 4×800 Meter Relay Team
