The Music Man: 39 thoughts I had while listening to Troye Sivan’s ‘Wild’
September 7, 2015
Last year, Australian YouTube personality Troye Sivan released one of my favorite extended plays of 2014, “TRXYE.” A dream pop masterpiece, “TRXYE” showcased both Sivan’s maturity and talent. After I heard it, I couldn’t wait for his next record.
About a year after he released “TRXYE,” Sivan announced a second EP, “Wild,” at VidCon. The month between the EP’s announcement and its release was characterized by a lot of teasers on social media, from short videos previewing each of the songs to a trailer for a music video trilogy from the album called “Blue Neighborhood.” Needless to say, I was more than ready to actually hear the full EP once it was released.
The other night, I decided to write down everything I thought while listening to “Wild.” It was only my second time listening to the EP in full, and I had essentially forgotten everything I heard the first time from the sheer euphoria of finally being able to actually hear the EP in full. So, here are some of my impressions of “Wild,” in the form of my random and slightly-humorous thoughts. Enjoy.
“Wild”
1. Children’s choirs are the cutest thing in music ever
2. Troye’s voice has improved so much since “TRXYE”
3. I wonder when the other two “Blue Neighborhood” music videos will be released
4. I like how this is actually upbeat because “TRXYE” had enough slow music
5. Oh my gosh, this is such a good chorus
6. “Hurt this good” is so grammatically incorrect but I love the lyric anyway because it’s Troye Sivan
“Bite”
7. Oooh, this kind of sounds like James Blake
8. That a capella intro though
9. These synthesizers though
10. This is such a cool and modern drop
11. Troye’s edited voice is so great too
12. That transition back to just piano kind of scared me
13. But really, though, who’d bite Troye?
“Fools”
14. Is this a classic piano ballad?
15. Nope, there are synthesizers
16. Troye’s pitch-shifted voice sounds so cool
17. Did he mean for “swimming pools” in the bridge to rhyme with “fools” in the chorus?
18. Tambourine is the most underrated-but-awesome instrument ever, and this is case in point
19. I had to take out an earbud for a second, I hope I didn’t miss any cool production
20. Why isn’t whoever produced this album famous yet?
“Ease” (featuring Broods)
21. Knock knock? Who’s there? No one, it’s just the beginning of “Ease”
22. Is this the song with Broods in it?
23. Georgia from Broods backs up Troye’s vocals so well
24. I hope she gets her own verse
25. I feel so bad for Caleb from Broods, no one knows he’s in this song
26. Oh look, Georgia gets to sing the bridge
27. “Sleeping at night”? Troye, you’re cutting it kind of close with these lyrics
“The Quiet”
28. The cymbals on these drums sound intriguing
29. These breathy vocals will be the death of me (in a good way)
30. This song has two expletives, someone better call Troye’s parents
31. That pitch-shifted voice though
32. The backing in the bridge is so epic
33. That noise sounds like an electronic harp, I love it
“DKLA” (featuring Tkay Maidza)
34. The industrial influences here are so perfect
35. I guess “DKLA” stands for “don’t keep love around”
36. These vocals are very matte, it’s a nice change
37. clap clap, clap
38. Who’s rapping? She sounds like a younger Nicki Minaj meets M.I.A.
39. Hip-hop Troye is the best Troye
And there you have it — 39 things I thought while listening to Troye Sivan’s new EP, “Wild.” If you can’t already tell, I’m in love with the EP and everything about it. I can’t wait to hear what Sivan does next musically (fingers crossed for an album), and I hope it’s even wilder than “Wild.”
